Shannon Cortez Gooden, a 38-year-old man with a history of legal issues, including a prior assault conviction, has been identified as the individual responsible for the fatal shooting of two Burnsville police officers and a firefighter. Gooden, who had previously sought to have his gun rights restored, was found deceased in his rented home, where authorities discovered several firearms and a large quantity of ammunition.
Law enforcement responded to a call at the residence on 33rd Avenue South early Sunday morning, where Gooden had barricaded himself inside with family members, including seven children. Despite efforts by police negotiators to peacefully resolve the situation, Gooden opened fire on officers, resulting in the tragic deaths of Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, as well as firefighter/paramedic Adam Finseth. Sergeant Adam Medlicott was also injured during the exchange of gunfire.
Following the shootout, Gooden was reported dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The official identification of his body will be conducted by the medical examiner, although law enforcement sources have confirmed his identity.
This devastating incident has left the Burnsville community in mourning, with two officers and a firefighter tragically losing their lives while serving their community. The injured officer, Sgt. Adam Medlicott, is expected to recover.
As the community grapples with this senseless loss, details continue to emerge about the events leading up to the shooting. Social media speculation has linked Gooden to the tragic incident, highlighting a disturbing video allegedly depicting him engaging in target practice.
The profound impact of this tragedy underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement and first responders in the line of duty. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and the entire Burnsville community as they mourn this devastating loss.
