Bob Kersee found enlightenment through his wife, Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Joyner won silver in the 1984 heptathlon in Los Angeles. Pre-event favorite, she finished five points behind Glynis Nunn. In long jump, she placed fifth.
Joyner scored over 7,000 points in the 1986 Goodwill Games heptathlon. She was named the top U.S. amateur athlete in 1986. Later, she competed in Seoul, Korea. She won heptathlon and long jump gold.
She set the heptathlon record with 7,291 points. East Germany’s Anke Vater-Behmer and Sabine John won silver and bronze.
Joyner-Kersee won her second gold medal five days later in the long jump, setting an Olympic record. First American woman to win gold in long jump and heptathlon.
