BeEtta Stoney – Kansas State University is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Be Stoney, a cherished member of the university community who made significant contributions to academics and athletics. Dr. Be Stoney, who served as the faculty athletics representative at Kansas State University for over a decade, passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
During her 13-year tenure as K-State’s faculty athletics representative from 2010 to 2023, Dr. Be Stoney worked closely with K-State Athletics and the Big 12 Conference on matters pertaining to academic integrity, rules compliance, and the welfare of student-athletes. Her dedication and commitment to ensuring the well-being of student-athletes were unwavering, and her impact on both the university and the world of college athletics was profound.
In addition to her role as an associate professor of curriculum and instruction in the College of Education, where she was a member of the graduate faculty and chair of the college’s undergraduate academic reinstatement committee, Dr. Be Stoney also served as the university’s interim chief diversity and inclusion officer from May 2021 until October 2022. Her leadership in promoting diversity and inclusion on campus was widely recognized and appreciated.
Dr. Be Stoney’s academic journey at Kansas State University began in 1999 when she joined the university as a race equality coordinator and later as a technical consultant for the Midwest Equality Assistance Center in the College of Education. Her dedication to education and equity eventually led her to become an assistant professor of secondary education in 2000 and, three years later, an associate professor.
Dominique Stoney-Quitoriano expressed her sorrow for the passing of BeEtta Stoney. She stated that:

Before her academic career at Kansas State University, Dr. Be Stoney worked as a special education teacher and department chair at the middle school level. She received her undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Texas at El Paso, specializing in secondary education-special education/health education and kinesiology, respectively. She furthered her education by completing doctoral studies in special education and multicultural education at the University of Texas in Austin.
Dr. Be Stoney’s impact extended beyond the classroom, as she was a standout basketball player during her time at the University of Texas at El Paso, where she amassed 1,249 points and was inducted into the UTEP Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010. Her love for college athletics and her passion for serving students led to her appointment as K-State’s faculty athletics representative, where she made invaluable contributions at both the conference and NCAA levels.
Kansas State University President Richard Linton expressed his condolences to Dr. Be Stoney’s family and praised her as a valued faculty member and a passionate advocate for education and athletics. Gene Taylor, the director of sports at the university, emphasized her impact on student-athletes and the broader college athletics landscape.
Dean of the College of Education, Debbie Mercer, recognized Dr. Be Stoney’s commitment to holding students to high standards and creating a legacy that includes a robust physical education program. Her kindness, dedication, and lasting contributions will be remembered by the K-State community, and her legacy of advocating for students and student-athletes will endure.
