News about Austin Harrouff

A judge determined Monday that alleged murderer Austin Harrouff was not responsible for the 2016 murder of a Tequesta couple at their home on Southeast Kokomo Alley in south Martin County due to the loss of mind.

John Stevens III, 59, and Michelle Mishcon, 53, were stabbed to death by Harrouff, 25, in a barbaric and random attack that also injured neighbor Jeffrey Fisher, who had been trying to help help the couple.

At the time, Harrouff was a 19-year-old student at Florida State University. When Stevens’ face was discovered bitten and chewed in the driveway, authorities discovered what appeared to be flesh in Harrouff’s teeth. According to deputies, Harrouff targeted Stevens III and Mishcon while on his way to his father’s house in the vicinity.

According to the records, the severity of Stevens III and Mishcon’s multiple injuries resulted in their early death, according to the medical examiner who performed the autopsy on them. Investigators found that to contain Harrouff, considerable force was required, including the use of Taser, police dogs, and numerous law enforcement officers.

From the very beginning of the trial, his defense team made it clear that they would request the acquittal of the mad defense. For that to happen, Harrouff had to convince the judge that he couldn’t understand the consequences of his actions, didn’t know what he was doing at the time of the murder, or didn’t know it was wrong.

Two psychologists, one working for the government and the other working for the defense, determined that Harrouff was in an “acute psychiatric phase” when the murder was committed.

According to the doctors, Harrouff “cannot distinguish right from wrong,” which means he meets Florida’s requirements to be exonerated due to dementia. Before making her decision, Circuit Judge Sherwood Bauer listened to nearly two hours of comments from relatives of Stevens and Mishcon, some of whom were furious and devastated. They often spoke directly to Harrouff as he sat motionless with three defense attorneys.

Cindy Mishcon, Michelle Mishcon’s sister, began by reading aloud the numerous text messages Harrouff had written to college friends and a girlfriend in the months leading up to the murder. He frequently makes comments about being drunk to the point of fainting and about using drugs almost every day.

She seems to become agitated as she reads more of the text, occasionally raising her voice when talking to Harrouff. She also detailed the contents of numerous taped phone calls Harrouff made to family members while he was in prison, in which she claimed he appeared to have smeared Stevens III and Mishcon and downplay his involvement in the murders.
