Asma Hamza Wikipedia, Wiki, Bio – On Monday, Google will honor Sudanese oud artist and composer Asma Hamza with a special doodle. On July 17, celebrations will be held to honor the artist’s legacy and the occasion on which in 1997 she was shortlisted for the winners of the Laylat Al Qadr Al Kubra music competition in Sudan. However, her vocal cords weren’t designed to do that safely, so she started whistling songs instead of singing them. Her father rented an oud, a lute-like instrument with a narrower neck and no frets so that Asma could practice after hearing her chorus of whistles.

She used her own memory and musical ear to teach herself how to play the tunes she heard on the oud. Despite being one of the few, her father supported her musical endeavors from the beginning. Asma recounts that she secretly wrote her first song at the time because it was not socially acceptable for women to compose music in Sudan.

As she grew older, she continued to write tunes for a number of talented Arab musicians and established herself as one of Sudan’s first female composers. She was also constantly honing her oud skills, and in 1946 she was one of the first women to receive formal training to play the instrument.
