Alberta Basaglia is the daughter of Franco Basaglia. Franco Basaglia was an Italian psychiatrist who was instrumental in the Italian mental reform movement that led to the adoption of the Basaglia Law in 1978. In Italy, the law abolished mental hospitals and replaced them with community-based mental health services.

Alberta grew up in an environment where her parents, both psychiatrists, discussed and worked to improve the Italian psychiatric system.

Wikipedia about Alberta Basaglia, biography

Basaglia is a psychologist currently leading the Youth Engagement and Peace Culture Service of the City of Venice. Since 1980, she has also led the Center for Women and the Center for Anti-Violence. Although she was initially attracted to science and engineering subjects and was considered an engineer, she eventually chose to follow in her parents’ footsteps and study psychology. During her studies, she is reminded of her father’s legacy, which she finds difficult. However, she persevered and graduated alongside her father, Franco Basaglia, in front of an audience. The Basaglia Law, passed in 1978, opened the door to asylum and rehabilitation for people held in inhumane conditions. While this is an important step forward, Alberta believes the revolution is far from over. She believes that revolutions are happening and that they must constantly transform in order to achieve their goals. Many people, including migrants, still lack rights and psychiatry has a lot of work to do.

In the late 1970s, this led to the closing of psychiatric hospitals in Italy. Alberta Basaglia had a different childhood than most, growing up in a house frequented by her father’s mental patients. The topic of mental illness was frequently discussed in her parents’ living room, where her parents laid the groundwork for the mental revolution.

Alberta has struggled with the burden of her father’s legacy throughout her life, while following in his footsteps. She trained as a psychologist, taught in kindergartens, and later supervised the City of Venice’s Women’s Center and Anti-Violence Center.

Alberta is now divorced with one daughter and she realizes the enormous influence her father had on her life. No details about Alberta’s daughter are made public and she prefers to keep her information hidden from the media.
