Richard E. Grant was born in Mbabane, Swaziland, on 5 May 1957. His father, Henrick Esterhuysen, was head of education in the British government and his mother, Leonne Esterhuysen. He grew up with his younger brother, Stuart Esterhuysen.
Mark’s, a local government school in Mbabane, is where he studied. He then studied English and Drama at the University of Cape Town after attending Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa (UWCSA).
