“The beautiful thing about softball is it has given me the opportunity to be around and meet some of the best people. It’s hard to put into words to describe Abby, but she was surely one of a kind! There was never a dull moment around her, and she always kept us laughing. I know it’s been awhile, but I know Abby Sterling has been spreading her joy and radiance making an impact on her athletes as she did with us as our teammate (and anyone outside of softball). It hurts my heart to see such a sweet soul be taken so soon.Once a sista, always a sista. Rest in peace, sweet girl!”
Prior to UT Dallas, Sterling played pivotal roles at Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas, as an assistant coach and residence life specialist, aiding the Roadrunners in achieving a notable 38–16 record during the 2021–22 school year. Before that, she served as an assistant and strength coach at the University of Arkansas Rich Mountain in Mena.
Sterling’s roots in softball stem from her playing days at Louisiana College in Pineville, an institution she represented with distinction in the American Southwest Conference. Her achievements, earning spots in the All-ASC honorable mention team (2018) and second team (2019), showcased her prowess, contributing significantly with impressive statistics in 75 games played.
Recognized as an Academic All-ASC performer during her freshman year, Sterling’s impact extended beyond the field. Her versatility, predominantly as a first baseman and designated player, highlighted her skills and dedication to the sport.
As the UT Dallas community grieves this loss, plans for Abby Sterling’s obituary and funeral arrangements will be shared by her family, allowing friends, colleagues, and the softball fraternity to honor and remember her legacy.
