The government of Punjab has announced the appointment of Mr. Aamir Zulfiqar as the new IG Punjab police officer who served as Deputy Director General of the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF). He has previously held additional positions of IG Executive, CPO Punjab, Lahore and IG National Highway & Highway Police.
As assistant superintendent of police (ASP), Mr. Zulfiqar received the Quaid-e-Azam Police Medal and the Pakistan Police Medal, two of the highest awards given by the police. . He is a member of the 19th Common and is from Lahore. He joined the Pakistan Police Service (PSP) in 1991.
In addition, he held the positions of Lahore SSP Regional Special Branch, Toba Tek Singh SSP Special Branch, Multan Regional Police Officer (RPO) and CTD Punjab DIG. He has served in Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and central government. Earlier, briefs of seven police officers were sent to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif so that one of the officers could be considered for the position of Punjab IGP.
AD Khwaja, Rao Musthaq Ahmed Mehr, Rao Sardar Ali Khan and Ali Aamir Malik are BS-22 officers who are “late entrants” in the race for the top spot of Punjab police. The Punjab government has proposed the names of Fayyaz Ahmad Dev, Amir Zulfiqar and Ghulam Mahmood Dogar, all BS-21 officials for the Punjab IGP post.
According to a person familiar with the procedure, the ongoing political crisis in Punjab has delayed the appointment of a regular IGP there.
According to him, PML-N leaders almost agreed to nominate Fayyaz Ahmad Dev, former CCPO Lahore, for the Punjab IGP position before PML-Q leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain’s recent alliance with the federal government led by PML-Q leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain. Shehbaz leader. He added that Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi was also not opposed to the appointment of Dev.
According to the official, PTI’s announcement of dissolution of the Punjab Council caused a volatile political atmosphere in the province just before Mr Dev’s appointment was scheduled.
He stated that some BS-22 police officers have also stepped up their efforts to be considered for the top position of Punjab police using their political connections.
As a direct consequence of this, the PML-N government ended the procedure and included the names of four senior police officers in the brief sent to the prime minister.
According to an official source, the issue of the regularly designated IGP in Punjab has been in the news since PTI came to power at the Centre. During his tenure of more than three years, PTI regularly changed the director of the provincial police.
Another provincial police chief, Faisal Shahkar, refused to serve in Punjab due to political infighting between PML-N and PTI-PMLQ authorities in Central and Punjab, which exacerbated the situation. Mr Shahkar requested in writing to transfer his assignment to the federal government, stating that he was unable to perform his duties in Punjab due to “personal reasons”.
However, the federal government asked him to stay in his position until a new provincial sheriff was appointed.
Mr Shahkar gave up his Punjab IGP position on Tuesday as he had to leave Pakistan for the United Nations, where he was selected for the top police post.
Ghulam Rasool Zahid, a member of the 19th Common and a BS-21 police officer, was appointed acting police chief of the province by the Punjab government on Wednesday.
