A Guide to Change or Update Outlook Account Password

Changing or updating your email account passwords is one of the most important steps to keeping them secure. Furthermore, it is important to choose a strong password that is not easy for others to guess.

If you haven’t changed your outlook’s password in a while, that could be at risk. Maybe you can’t do it because you don’t know how to change your outlook password. It’s not very complicated and as you read more you will find methods to change your Outlook account password.

Outlook password change method

Method-1: Change your Outlook.com password

  1. Visit the Outlook Live page to initiate the password change process and click on the ‘Sign In’ you see in the top right corner of the screen.

  3. You will be redirected to the Sign In page, enter the email address or phone number associated with your Outlook account and press ‘Next’.

  5. Next, you have to enter the password for your account and click ‘Login’.

  7. Once you’ve signed in to your account, you’ll see an inbox with some additional information. Take your cursor to the top right corner and click on your profile name.

  9. You will see three options- my profile, my account and sign out. Click ‘My Profile’.

  11. At the top, next to the ‘Your Info’ heading, you’ll again see three options. Click the one that says ‘Change your password’.

  13. To change your Outlook password, you need to verify your old password first and then click ‘Sign in’.

  15. You will then be asked to verify your identity, click on the recovery email address you see.

  17. Now enter the full email address to receive the code and after entering click ‘Send Code’.

  19. Enter the code you received on your recovery email address and click ‘Verify’.

  21. You will be directed to a page where you have to enter your current password and a new password, then press ‘Save’.

  23. That is all; Your Outlook password has been changed successfully.

Method-2: Change Your Outlook Client Password

If you’ve changed the password for your email provider, you’ll also need to update it in the Outlook email client.

If you signed up for Office 365 with monthly updates, follow the given methods to do it:

  • Launch the Outlook app, click ‘File’, then ‘Account Settings’, then ‘Update Password’.
  • There you can update the password in Outlook and click ‘Ok’.

If you signed up for Office 365 with semiannual updates or have Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, or 2010 or purchased Outlook as a standalone program, follow the steps given:

  1. Launch Outlook, click ‘File’ and go to ‘Account Settings’. In the drop-down menu, click ‘Account Settings’ again.
  2. Next, select the email account for which you want to change the password, then select ‘Change’.
  3. The Change Account window will open where you can update your password.
  4. Note: POP and IMAP accounts won’t offer this option, in which case go to File > Account Settings > Manage Profiles. Click on Emails Accounts and select the email account for which you want to change the password. Then click ‘Change’ and in the Change Account window update your password.

  5. Click ‘Close’ after Outlook verifies your account settings, then click Finish > Close to return to Outlook.

Important:

If you use Outlook from your Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, Apple, Outlook.com or @me.com account, you can’t use your regular password to set up these accounts. They may require two-factor authentication plus an app password.

This is a one-time password that you must enter instead of your regular account password when you first set up your account.

Method-3: How to change password for Outlook data file?

You can even set a password for your Outlook data file (PST) so that if someone tries to access the file, they will be prompted for the password. To change the password for the Outlook Data file, you will be asked to enter the initial password to open Outlook. Here are the steps you need to follow to update your password:

  1. Click the ‘File’ tab and then ‘Info’. The ‘Account Information’ window will open.
  2. Then click ‘Account Settings’ and select ‘Account Settings’ again to open the settings window.
  3. Clicking on the ‘Data File’ tab will display the information of the Outlook data files.
  4. Select ‘Outlook Data File’ and click ‘Settings’ to open the data file settings window.

Click on the ‘Change Password’ option and enter your old password. Then enter the new password twice. If you do not enter the old password, you cannot enter the new password.
