Calgary, Alberta – In a shocking turn of events, Steven Allen, 34, is now facing manslaughter charges in connection with the Tuesday murder of 35-year-old David Mervin Berglund in the northeast Temple neighborhood. The incident, labeled a road rage altercation by the police, has left the community in disbelief.
Following his court appearance on Wednesday, December 13th, 2023, Steven Allen was granted release on bond by a justice of the peace. The court proceedings shed light on the grim details of the road rage incident that unfolded the day before.
The turmoil began with a “non-injury hit-and-run” collision between a red Chevrolet Aveo and a GMC Sierra pickup. A passenger in the Aveo promptly called the police, reporting an ongoing road rage dispute between the two drivers. Reports indicate that the driver of the Sierra displayed a knife during the altercation.
Despite police advice to cease communication with the aggressive driver, the occupants of the Aveo continued to follow the Sierra. The situation escalated when, in the 6900 block of Temple Drive N.E., the driver of the Sierra exited his vehicle. Subsequently, a violent collision occurred as the Aveo reversed into the Sierra, forcing him into a nearby tree.
Tragically, the driver of the Sierra, identified as David Mervin Berglund, succumbed to the injuries sustained in the incident. Witnesses recounted the aftermath, where two individuals from the Aveo were observed covering the victim, who lay on the snow-covered grass.
In a surprising move, Steven Allen was released on a $2,000 bond, with conditions including a prohibition on contact with a woman (name withheld) and a restriction on firearm ownership. Additionally, Allen is mandated to reside just two streets away from the alleged murder scene. His next court appearance is scheduled for February.
The Calgary Chief of Police, Mark Neufeld, described the incident as “shocking,” highlighting the gravity of the situation that unfolded in the Temple neighborhood. The community awaits further developments as the legal proceedings progress. David Berglund’s obituary and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family at a later date.
