In a disturbing turn of events, a 15-year-old student from Carver Vocational School in Baltimore became the victim of a gunshot wound near the school premises on Wednesday, marking the second shooting incident outside a school within a week. Authorities from the school’s police department reported that the student’s head was grazed by a bullet, adding to the growing safety concerns in the city.
Police officers responded to a call about the shooting around 4 o’clock in the afternoon and swiftly arrived at the 2200 block of Presstman Street, where they found the injured teenager. Fortunately, medical professionals are optimistic about the student’s recovery prospects after being taken to a hospital.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another tragic event. Last Friday, 17-year-old Jeremiah Brogden, a student at Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School, was shot multiple times in the school’s parking lot following a disagreement with another student. Despite the swift response of school resource unit officers, who apprehended the suspect after a brief chase, Brogden succumbed to his injuries in a medical facility.
The unnamed suspect, who is currently in police custody, attempted to discard the handgun used in the shooting, but law enforcement officers managed to recover the firearm. The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, will face charges as an adult, according to the police. Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to contact the Western District Shooting investigators at 410-396-2477 or the Metro Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-866-7LOCK-UP to aid the ongoing investigation.
These incidents have further intensified concerns about the safety of students and staff in Baltimore schools. As of Wednesday morning, the Baltimore Police Department disclosed alarming statistics: there have been 243 homicides in the city so far this year, reflecting a 5.7 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Additionally, the department reported 383 non-fatal shootings this year, marking a concerning 10.3 percent rise from the previous year. The surge in violence underscores the pressing need for comprehensive measures to address the escalating security challenges faced by the community.
