The North Carolina Senate last week decided to appoint Woody White to the University of North Carolina’s board of trustees, which consists of 24 people.
From 2018 until his departure in September 2021, the defense attorney and former New Hanover County commissioner served on the board of UNCW. Tim Moore, speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives, appointed him.
Senator Michael Lee of New Hanover County has proposed that White be elected to the UNC board of governors. (R-7). On March 14, the Senate Select Committee on Nominations, chaired by Senator Bill Rabon (R-8) of Brunswick County, began debating six names for the panel: two new and four names were re-nominated. The next day, the nominees were approved.
According to Senator Gladys Robinson (D-28), a member of the committee, the two new nominees are white Republicans, who argued that to truly represent the UNC system, the Senate more diverse candidates should be considered.
Although women make up the majority in the UNC system, Robinson notes that there are not many women on the board of governors. It also doesn’t have a lot of people of color on it. Five of the board’s 24 voting members are female and four are Black. White accused the university of suppressing conservative views after leaving UNCW.
After his departure, White stated on Facebook, “When a conservative professor fought for his First Amendment equality and won $700,000, he was still being held by a U.S. Department of State. unrepentant management abandoned and bullied to the point of suicide.”
Mike Adams, a conservative professor whose methods of teaching and dealing with students are controversial, are the topics he covers. After Adam accepted a $500k early retirement package from the university in early 2021, White hinted that the university also bears some of the blame. The deal with UNCW was reached as pressure to resign grew and threats of lawsuits became more real. Adams took his own life a week before his scheduled retirement.
The university’s response to associate professor Dan Johnson, who wrote in a May 2021 Facebook post, “Blow the Republicans away,” contrasts with this case for White. After the article was reported locally in June, Johnson issued an apology and the organization claimed to have “acted on the information in a timely and appropriate manner”, according to WECT. White complained about the double standard regarding freedom of speech in a letter to Sartarelli at the time.
White commented on Facebook, “But when a libertarian professor advocates violence against conservative students, no one says anything.” “Nothing happens,”
The university’s response to COVID-19, specifically its choice to hold live classes digitally, was also criticized by White. He advised people who signed up for traditional classes who switched to online classes for a refund.
