William Gay, the Commanders’ assistant defensive backs coach, has no wife but was formerly engaged to an Olympian. Gay is engaged to Natasha Hastings, a two-time Olympic gold winner, in 2018. The two sportsmen also have a son, William Rydell Gay, Jr., whom they affectionately nickname Liam. Their son was born in 2019, however, the couple has since split, and their engagement did not lead to marriage.
Gay served ten seasons in the NFL as a cornerback with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He retired in 2018 after training camp with the New York Giants. Gay’s coaching career started a year later. He worked as a coaching intern for Mike Tomlin for the 2019 season and eventually accepted a position at Missouri State, where he will teach defensive backs in 2020. He was awarded a coaching fellowship by the Cowboys in 2023, and he announced in January that he will be joining Steve Sarkisian’s Texas Longhorns as an analyst. But now, William will return to the NFL.
William Gay Wife: Is Commanders’ New DB Coach Married?
William Gay does not have a wife but was once engaged to Natasha Hastings. William, a former Steelers defender, proposed to the Olympian in 2018, but the couple never married. He had previously uploaded the engagement post on his Instagram account but has subsequently erased it. Hastings, William’s previous fiancée, is a 400-meter track and field sprinter. She started her career at an early age, competing in the USATF Junior Olympics.
Who is Natasha Hastings?
Hastings, a University of South Carolina alumnus, rose to prominence as “the 400M Diva.” During her career at the University of South Carolina, Hastings won the NCAA 400-meter championship both indoors and outdoors in 2007. Hastings’ time of 50.15 was the second-fastest ever at the college level. She also won the Southeastern Conference title that year. Hastings made the US Olympic Track & Field Team and competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics.
She earned an Olympic gold medal in the Women’s 4x400m relay team event. Natasha finished fourth in the 2013 World Championships while representing her nation. In 2015, Hastings earned a silver medal in the 4×400-meter relay. In 2016, she won another gold medal in the same category. Hastings, a New York native, earned 13 gold medals throughout her illustrious career. Natasha declared her retirement from the field in 2022 and stated her desire to work as a sports psychologist.
Natasha told The Players Tribune, “I want to be a Black woman working as a psychologist in a field that has historically been dominated by men and has far too few therapists who are women of color.” Natasha earned a master’s degree in clinical mental health from The Chicago School in 2023 and presently works as an HPS Consultant for Under Armour. Natasha established the Natasha Hastings Foundation in 2018. The Olympian gold winner founded the charity to motivate and financially support women who have qualified for high school nationals but cannot otherwise afford to go.
William and Natasha Have a Son
Natasha and William, former athletes, had their only child, William Rydell Gay, Jr. on August 6, 2019. Natasha previously published her pregnancy experience on the Maeband website. Natasha wrote in her pregnancy notebook about her worry about her work. When Natasha was five months pregnant and showing, she had the guts to contact her sponsor, Under Armour. The Olympian anticipated to be dumped, but to her astonishment, everyone cheered for her. In an interview with CNBC, Hastings said, “It was almost like I had tortured myself for five months thinking about all the possible outcomes.”
But it seems that following the birth of their baby, William and Natasha chose to part ways. On his son’s first birthday, William uploaded an Instagram photo referring to their breakup. He posted a picture of him and Natasha with their baby, Liam, with the statement, “We may have some differences as adults, but raising Liam will require maximum effort from both sides.” He has a mother and father who adore him wholeheartedly.
Natasha and William have posted many Instagram images featuring their kid. Natasha let her kid attend her master’s graduation ceremony last year. The former NFL star has also been seen driving his kid to work, with additional photos showing Liam on the football field.
