Why is ‘Monty Don’ missing from Gardeners World?

Monty Don, the beloved presenter of Gardeners’ World, is feeling the absence of the show as he grieves the loss of his cherished dachshund, Brenda.

In a heartfelt social media post, the 68-year-old horticulturist opened up about the recent passing of Brenda, one of his two miniature dachshunds residing at Longmeadow. Although Brenda never graced the Gardeners’ World screen, Monty Don is renowned for his love of dogs and frequently offers gardening advice to viewers with the company of his two golden retrievers, Ned and Nellie.

The occasional presence of his Yorkshire terrier, Patti, on the popular BBC Two program has also delighted viewers. However, despite the upcoming episode of Gardeners’ World scheduled to air on BBC Two at 9 pm on Thursday, August 31, Monty is notably absent.

Stepping in to provide gardening wisdom is presenter Adam Frost, who will guide viewers through late-season tips as autumn approaches. He will be joined by Ash the cat, who will oversee the garden inspection.

Frances Tophill, on the other hand, will be exploring a garden in Kent where plants offer an endless feast for insects. In the same episode, host Nick Bailey ventures to the Cornish coastline to unravel the mysteries of hardy palms.

The episode’s synopsis teases viewers with, “There’s a chef-turned-gardener who loves to grow all manner of unusual tasty crops. And there’s a visit to a sloping garden in Swansea for some top design tips. Plus more of the amazing films that have been sent in by viewers.”

As for Monty Don’s presence on the show, there is no indication that he will make an appearance. Monty’s poignant message about Brenda’s passing surfaced earlier this week when Gardeners’ World shared an endearing photo of her on Twitter. In the tweet, the horticulturist expressed his sentiments, saying, “Ah lovely picture of Brenda. Much missed.”

This loss is not the first for Monty Don, as he previously experienced the passing of his golden retriever, Nigel, a few years ago. Nigel used to be a familiar face on the show, appearing alongside Monty during segments filmed at Longmeadow, before his unfortunate demise in 2020.
