Phil Knight Biography
William Knight and Lota Hartfield Knight welcomed Phil Hampson Knight into the world on 24 February 1938, in Portland, Oregon’s East Moreland neighborhood. His father was a publisher of newspapers.
Cleveland High School was where he finished his primary education. He attended the University of Oregon in Eugene for his graduate studies, where he explored journalism while working as a sports reporter, graduating in 1959. Since his father wanted him to find employment on his own, he began working for the Oregonian newspaper despite his desire to work at his father’s publication.
On 13 September 1968, he married Penelope Penny, with whom he had three children later. Travis Knight, Christina Knight, and Mathew Knight.

Phil Knight immediately enlisted in the military after earning his degree from Oregon University, serving seven years in the army reserves and one year of active duty. He was accepted to a Stanford business school after serving in the army. He worked for Price Waterhouse as a certified public accountant before joining Cooper & Lybrand.
He finally founded Blue-Ribbon Sports(BRS), which eventually changed its name to Nike, on 25 January 1964, alongside Bowerman, who contributed product design ideas. Plymouth Valiant cars were the source of his initial sales. He was able to work full-time at BRS because of these sales. He was advised to alter the name from BRS to Nike in 1978, and Nike was subsequently founded.
Knight purchased a small percentage of Vinton Studios’ stock in 1998; he then acquired Will Vinton Studios, which Nike subsequently owned. Later in 2003, he appointed Travis Knight to the board of the studios, which were renamed “Laika,” and to the positions of CEO and President.
Knight resigned from his position as CEO of Nike on 18 November 2004, several months after the passing of his son, Matthew Knight. Nevertheless, he continued to serve as the board’s chairman. William Perez succeeded him as Nike CEO, which Mark Parker then followed.
In 2006, he made a $105 million donation to the Stanford Graduate School of Business, which was eventually renamed “The Knight Management Center.” He announced his intention to leave his position as Nike’s chairman in June 2015.
