McKayla said in a recent audio chat with 101.3 KFDI that she’s been performing since middle school because she comes from a family of musicians. She says her father traveled with a band as a country performer and this helped her develop a love of singing at an early age.
McKayla’s favorite judge is still the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Famer Lionel Richie, and she’s motivated to audition because it’s the sixth season of ABC’s iconic reality TV series , somehow connected with the journey of Phil, McKayla’s father in season 6 of the show, back when it aired on FOX.
American Idol originally aired on FOX from 2002 to 2016, then paused for two years before continuing in 2018. After a two-year hiatus, the show returns with a sixth season in 2023. McKayla appeared via Zoom to try out, singing the 1987 rock classic, Alone by Heart. Phil and McKayla’s situation is unusual. Phil’s wife, Kendra, gave birth to their daughter McKayla in the summer of 2006, while he was in Memphis trying out for season 6 of American Idol.
Phil performed live versions of My Sweetheart and Let’s Get It On. Former judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson voted in his favor after a brief debate, while Simon Cowell abstained. American Idol cameras followed him when he saw little McKayla for the first time at the end of the show. Phil was a Finalist 6 of the show in Season 6. McKayla is currently auditioning for season 21 after maturing into a talent in her own right.
