Marybeth Byrd’s experience on The Voice is examined before her audition on American Idol.
Marybeth Byrd, the prospective American Idol competitor, has already been on television and participated in another singing reality program. She was one of the candidates on NBC’s The Voice season 17 in 2019 when she made it to the Top 8 on John Legend’s team. At her blind audition, she sang Angel from Montgomery and turned all four chairs, but she finally chose to join Legend’s squad.
The Top 13 were requested to donate a song to someone who had influenced them throughout the program, and the next American Idol season 21 vocalist dedicated a song to her late grandpa, who died the day before her blind auditions. She revealed in the show that the song she chose, Go Rest High on that Mountain, was one she and her grandpa regularly performed together. Although she was dealing with her loss, her coach urged her to include it into her performance, which she did.
She stated:
“I can’t think of a greater way to respect his memory than to carry out his wishes from the day I was born. On Monday, I know he has the greatest seat in the house.”
She went on to say:
“I wouldn’t be on The Voice if he hadn’t shown me his passion for music. It’s difficult to lose someone who was such a bright light.”
The judges praised her performance, and Blake Shelton told her that it reminded him of his late father and that he understood exactly how she felt trying to get through it. He went on to say that he sometimes can’t listen to the same music because it’s so upsetting. John Legend said that by revealing her sadness, she enabled the nation to see the aspects of her that made her who she is, and that her grandpa inspired her to become a singer and artist.
Additional information about the singer
The future American Idol competitor is now 21 years old and a virtual student at Arkansas State University. She received the Kansas Country Music Awards’ Young Artist of the Year award in 2021.
According to her website:
“One of her ambitions is to be a role model for other young musicians who are striving to discover their voice, confidence, and place in the competitive music business. Above all, she wishes for her life to be used to praise God and benefit others.”
