After five tough stages, American Idol has advanced to Hollywood Week, where selected candidates will perform solo and in pairs under various obstacles. The show will air on ABC on Sunday, April 2 at 8 p.m. ET. Dawson Wayne is a singer-songwriter who has successfully passed the off-camera audition of American Idol and will advance to Hollywood Week.
Last August, he auditioned for Zoom’s popular music challenge. Wayne traveled to Nashville to perform live in front of judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. Dawson was one of 150 contestants agreed by all three reviewers and will now compete for a spot among the top 24 vocalists.

Dawson Wayne, real name Dawson Rice, is a Katy, Texas resident and a Reagan High School alum. He is the pit conductor and percussionist for his school’s military band. Dawson has performed on stage in the Foundations and Chamber Choir as Hello Dolly and Titanic. For his work on Titanic, he received a $4000 bounty at the Joci Awards. Wayne is currently attending Brigham Young University in Hawaii and plans to move to Utah.
He also wants to attend BYU in Provo, and he published his solo record, With All My Heart (written by someone else), last October as part of the Church’s annual student album. Latter-day Saints of Jesus Christ. During a discussion about her record, the American Idol contestant revealed:
“It was the best thing I’ve ever done; I’ve always loved music and wanted to make a career out of it, so coming to this huge recording studio with this producer (Mitch Davis), who is so talented, has changed my life.”
Dawson’s life purpose is to “look at the audience and give them a good performance,” something they can sense and make them grin. Dawson published his first original single, More Me, Lonely, on the night of his Hollywood Week show. The music Wayne played during his audition wasn’t clear, but it pleased the reviewers. Katy Perry calls him “an inventive artist,” and Judge Richie added:
“I love where your voice comes from — deep inside, from a spiritual place.”
Jana Rice, Wayne’s mother, revealed that although Dawson appears calm on the surface, his ambition is to compete on American Idol. Jana wasn’t in Hollywood at the time of Wayne’s performance, so she’ll be seeing him act on television for the first time alongside the others.

Gold and silver ticket holders will compete in episode 7 of American Idol season 21 to make it to the top 24 finalists. Many former champions and players on the show will guide the contestants, including:
