During his senior year of high school, he worked as a student intern for The New York Times and also for a paper that published 71 articles before he graduated. He began writing media and technology articles while still in college and assisting advertising columnist Stuart Elliot.

During his summer in London, he wrote for the New York Times about European business and technology and later returned to Cornell to finish his studies, where he was vice president of the Sigma Pi Fraternity. In 1999, he accepted a full-time position as The New York Times’ European mergers and acquisitions reporter in London.
