Gilbert Arenas is a former American professional basketball player. He was born out of wedlock to his parents, Gilbert Sr. and Mary Robinson. The couple’s relationship did not work out as expected, just as they believed their son’s birth would herald a fresh beginning in their lives. His parents divorced when he was six months old.
Gilbert then moved in with his mother to his grandparents’ home in Florida. Later, when he was three, his father brought him to live with him, drastically altering his life. Gilbert Arenas played for four different NBA clubs over a decade, garnering several trophies and accolades. He was at the pinnacle of his career with the Washington Wizards, averaging more than 20.0 points per game in numerous seasons.

Gilbert Arenas was born on January 6, 1982, in Tampa, Florida, to Gilbert Arenas Sr. and his girlfriend Mary Robinson. Gilbert Sr., who is originally from Tampa, met Mary while studying at the University of Miami. They fell in love soon after, and Gilbert was born when Mary was still a teenager. Gilbert grew raised in Miami with his mother and her family until he was three years old when his father was still in college and unemployed. Gilbert Sr. finally acquired custody of his son when Mary was unable to care for him due to drug usage.
Gilbert’s life altered drastically once he moved home with his father. Gilbert Sr. was an athlete who participated in baseball and football in college. As a result, he instilled in his kid a similar determination. Gilbert Jr., on the other hand, was more interested in basketball than any other sport. When his father relocated to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career a few years later, he brought his kid with him. Gilbert played basketball for his high school squad at Ulysses S. Grant High School in California.
Gilbert Arenas wanted to play in the NBA when he was twelve years old. Knowing his son’s ambitions, his father spent his time to developing his talents and accompanied him to the academy to practice the game. Gilbert is still thankful to his father for not abandoning him in foster care and raising him independently despite various challenges.
Gilbert Only Met His Mother Once, When He Was 20 Years Old
As previously reported, the former basketball star divorced his mother when he was three and was reared alone by his father. He frequently wished for his mother to emerge as a child, but she never did. Mary Robinson tracked down her son almost eighteen years later when he was in Miami for a game for the Golden State Warriors in his second NBA season.
Gilbert briefly saw her after the match, but he was cautious at first since he had no clue who she was. However, after meeting her, he realized she was his biological mother but was unclear how to feel about it. After their talk, she provided him her phone number, but he never called her. Mary Robinson died on March 13, 2010, at the age of 46, never seeing her son again.
