He graduated from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in 1989, with a focus in Speech Communication and Rhetoric. Notably, Gary was instrumental in sparking Jayda’s enthusiasm for basketball from an early age.

She was also a former athlete, having played softball in her youth. She also studied public relations and journalism at California State University from 1985 to 1990.
