The discovery of the dismembered remains, initially unidentified, near the 7300 block of Old Alexander Ferry Road in Clinton, came after a concerned citizen alerted the police. Subsequently, the remains were sent to a medical examiner for DNA analysis, which confirmed their tragic connection to Mariame Sylla.

Authorities have yet to establish a motive for the heinous act, emphasizing that the victim and the suspect were not acquainted. Prince George’s County Police Chief Malik Aziz stated, “This appears to be stranger to stranger at this particular time.” While maintaining an open-minded investigative approach, he acknowledged the senseless nature of the crime:

“I just think we have a person who decided to commit a horrific crime. The most horrific crime you can do is murder. And do that for some unknown, unjustifiable reason.”
