On May 5, 2023, Gonzalo Lira, also known as Coach Red Pill, was arrested by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) at his residence in Kharkiv, Ukraine. The 55-year-old author and filmmaker has been charged by authorities with pro-Russian propaganda. The SBU accused Lira of creating content supporting Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. They labeled the SBU as “Ukrainian Gestapo”.
The Ukrainian secret police arrested a prominent critic of the regime, the Chilean-American blogger Gonzalo Lira.
He was accused of “discrediting the highest political-military leadership and the Self-Defense Forces” of Ukraine.

Gonzalo Lira, creator of the Coach Red Pill YouTube channel, was born in Burbank, California, but raised in the United States and Ecuador. He also studied in Chile and currently holds dual citizenship, USA and Chile. Lira was known for her provocative commentary, especially on the Russo-Ukrainian conflict.
In addition to her online personality, Lira is also known for her works of fiction. In 1997, he released the book Tomáh Errázurih, followed by a short film he wrote and produced called So Kinky a year later. He is best known for his novel Acrobat, which was made into a film the same year.
Lira moved to Chile in 2006, where he co-wrote, produced and directed the film Catalina’s Kidnapping.
After a brief blogging period, Lira moved to Kharkiv, Ukraine, where he launched his YouTube channel. His videos revolve around dating tips and anti-feminist commentary. Some of his controversial titles include “Never Date a Single Mother” and “Never Date a Girl Over 25”. However, after four years, Lira deleted all her videos and started posting content under her legal name.
In 2022, as Russia began its occupation of Ukraine, Lira shared a video discussing the ongoing conflict.
He declared:
“Although Ukraine may win the propaganda war, Russia wins the real war by taking territory. Currently, 15% of Ukraine’s territory is under the control of the Russian military.
In his videos, Gonzalo Lira makes insulting remarks to the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, while also defending Russia’s attack on Ukraine and blaming Ukraine for the conflict. He even went as far as to suggest that the country would benefit under Russian rule.
In April last year, Lira was kidnapped by the SBU and detained for a week due to his claims. However, he was released after public outcry over his detention.
On May 5 of this year, the SBU confirmed the arrest of an unnamed blogger. The Daily Beast later revealed that the individual arrested was actually Gonzalo Lira. Video of the raid and Lira’s ensuing fear went viral on social media.
