Gastonia, North Carolina – The city of Gastonia is in mourning following the passing of its well-known Mayor, Walker E. Reid, III. Mayor Reid, a beloved figure in the community, passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2023, leaving his family, friends, and colleagues devastated. The official announcement expressed deep sorrow: “We are saddened to announce that our beloved Mayor Walker E. Reid, III passed away today, Thursday, November 30, 2023. We are saddened at his death, and he will be dearly missed.”
Mayor Reid’s legacy in Gastonia extends beyond his role in city government. In November 2017, he secured his first position as mayor, initiating a tenure that would last for two years. A testament to his leadership, he successfully won re-election in November 2019, extending his term to a total of four years.
Mayor Reid’s educational journey began after graduating from Hunter Huss High School in 1975. He earned an Associate of Arts degree in Fire Science Technology from Gaston College. His commitment to education in the fire service was further demonstrated by his graduation from prestigious institutions such as the North Carolina Fire College, the North Carolina Fire Prevention School at the Institute of Government (UNC Chapel Hill), the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and the R. Kennett Scott Fire Prevention School.
Mayor Reid’s professional journey spanned an impressive 23-year term as an Assistant Fire Marshal Fire & Life Safety Educator at the Mecklenburg County Fire Marshal’s Office. Serving as an educator for fire and life safety, he achieved a Level III State Certification as a Fire Inspector and a Level III Life Safety Educator on November 30, 2009.
Prior to his role in Mecklenburg County, Mayor Reid contributed significantly to the City of Gastonia as a Fire Inspector for six years and as a Firefighter for three years. His dedication to education persisted, with a notable 15-year tenure as a Fire Service Instructor at Gaston College.
