Vincent Francis Papale was born on February 9, 1946, in Glenolden, Pennsylvania. At Interboro High School, he lettered in football, track & field, and basketball. During his varsity football season, Papale was named All-Delaware County Honorable Mention. As a senior, Vince joined the track and field team and won the pole vault event at the District I large-schools championship before finishing fourth in the state competition.

After finishing his undergraduate career, Vince Papale joined the Aston Green Knights of the Seaboard Football League. He also coached a junior varsity football team and taught business to middle school students at Interboro High School from 1968 to 1974. In the spring of 1974, Papale abandoned his job as a teacher to try out for the Philadelphia Bell. He was promoted to their main roster and spent the next two seasons with them. During that season, he had nine catches for 121 yards, averaging 13.4 yards per catch. In 1975, he only caught one pass, but it was a 49-yard touchdown. He was named a “special teams” standout in each of his seasons with the Bell.
When his career with Bell ended, Papale went to work at a tavern. He also played “rough touch” football in the bar leagues. During this period, Jim Murray, the general manager of the Philadelphia Eagles, asked him to a personal training session supervised by Dick Vermeil. At the age of 30, Papale made his NFL debut with the Eagles, making him the NFL’s oldest rookie without any college-level experience. In 1976, 1977, and 1978, he played 14 games as a wide receiver and 13 games on special teams. During his stint with the club, he recovered two fumbles and had a 15-yard catch.
