A tragic shootout involving Connecticut State Police troopers unfolded on Thursday night, resulting in the loss of a man sought on felony charges and the life of a valued police dog, Broko. The authorities reported the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. in Pawcatuck, near the Rhode Island state line, as troopers attempted to serve a warrant. Specifics of the shootout, including the individuals involved in the gunfire, remain undisclosed.
Vaughn Malloy and Broko, the state police dog, tragically lost their lives in the confrontation, as confirmed by the state Inspector General’s Office in a statement released on Friday. Although details on troop injuries were not immediately available, it was revealed that the felony arrest warrant was issued by Norwich police.
K9 Broko was praised by state police for his courageous service, sacrificing his life to protect his handler, fellow troopers, and the community. He had an impressive track record in search and rescue missions, capturing suspects, and providing steadfast support to his handler, exemplifying unwavering dedication.

The procession honoring Broko’s bravery saw numerous police cars passing through the town, paying tribute to the fallen police dog, a member of the state police search and rescue team and a 2021 graduate of the patrol K-9 class. Broko previously served at the Southbury barracks before joining the state-wide K-9 team.
Vaughn Malloy, the subject of the arrest warrant, faced allegations of probation violation and court evasion, as per state court records. His probationary sentence stemmed from a conviction related to breaking a protection order, with additional charges of “failure to appear in court” linked to various moving offenses.
