She was found by casting agent Ethel Winant in 1970 and was offered the chance to audition for the part of Rhoda Morgenstern on ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show,’ which she appeared in from 1970 to 1974, as well as in its spinoff series ‘Rhoda.’ Other significant TV shows starring Valerie Harper include ‘Valerie,’ ‘Touched by an Angel,’ and ‘And Three Sisters’ (2001). She was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009 and disclosed on March 6, 2013, that she had leptomeningeal carcinomatosis.
