USM student commits suicide after Jumping from 5th floor of parking garage on Hattiesburg campus

Hattiesburg, Mississippi – A somber atmosphere shrouds the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) community as they grapple with the heartbreaking news of USM student suicide at the university’s parking garage in Hattiesburg on Thursday, September 28. The student, yet to be officially identified, tragically lost their life in a devastating event that has left the campus deeply saddened.

University Police are actively investigating the incident, and while the details are still unfolding, there is no suspicion of criminal activity, according to a message from University of Southern Mississippi President, Joseph Paul, who expressed his heartfelt condolences to the student’s family and friends.

In addition, counselors will be available for individual crisis support on Friday, September 29, to offer assistance and solace.

Law enforcement agencies swiftly responded to the distress call on Thursday, with a significant number of police vehicles converging at the Southern Miss Parking garage around 7 p.m. Eyewitnesses reported a notable police presence in the vicinity of Thad Cochran Center Parking, the university’s parking lot in Hattiesburg, MS.

Reports suggest the tragic incident involved the student jumping from the fifth floor of the parking garage. The individual was promptly transported to a nearby hospital where, despite medical efforts, they succumbed to their injuries.
