David began his journey with Brookings in July 2013, joining as a senior fellow in the Foreign Policy program’s John L. Thornton China Center. He later became jointly affiliated with the Global Economy and Development program. During his tenure at Brookings, David authored numerous commentaries, policy briefs, and research reports. He co-edited two books: “China 2049: Economic Challenges of a Rising Global Power” with Yiping Huang and Yang Yao (2020) and “The Digital Financial Revolution in China” with Yiping Huang (2022).

One of his significant contributions was pioneering the Dollar & Sense podcast, becoming the first Brookings scholar to host such a platform. The podcast served as a valuable medium to showcase Brookings’s extensive scholarship on trade and brought insightful discussions to a broad audience. David’s engaging approach in moderating interdisciplinary dialogues made Dollar & Sense a reference point for journalists and policymakers.

RIP, David Dollar. 💔 A brilliant mind on China’s political economy who always remembered to credit others’ work. Here’s one of my last fact-checking exchanges with David. And his ask: Credit his team, not just himself. https://t.co/x7APOStZTd pic.twitter.com/mqmqynqo0L
