Burlington, VT – The University of Vermont community is grappling with the loss of a student, identified as Jack Cavagnolo, who tragically took his own life after battling depression and anxiety. The incident, marked by immense sadness, has prompted an investigation by authorities.
The University of Vermont Police responded to a distressing scene on Saturday, December 9, 2023, following reports of a male student, an active member of the university and an athlete, who was involved in an apparent suicide. The student was rushed to the UVM Medical Center, where, despite efforts, he was pronounced deceased.
The University of Vermont has refrained from issuing an official statement regarding the incident, but a heightened police presence was observed at the campus as the situation unfolded.
This unfolding story adds to recent tragic events at the university. Following a separate incident involving a homicide-suicide that claimed the lives of two students, Vice Provost for Student Affairs, Erica Caloiero, expressed deep concern and assured the community of their focus on supporting students and ensuring their safety.
In the previous incident, Kayla Noonan, 22, a community entrepreneurship major, was fatally shot by Mikal Dixon, 27, who then took his own life. Another individual sustained injuries and is currently receiving care at UVM Medical Center.
Caloiero emphasized the school’s dedication to student well-being and heightened security measures, urging affected students to seek counseling and reassuring ongoing support for the community.
While Burlington police continue their investigation into the recent crimes, municipal councilors representing the area of the incidents have issued a joint statement condemning the escalating gun violence in Burlington.
The University of Vermont mourns the loss of Jack Cavagnolo and remains committed to supporting its students and enhancing safety measures in the wake of these distressing events.
Details regarding Jack Cavagnolo’s obituary and funeral arrangements are pending and will be released by his family in due course.
