University of Nevada Professor Anthony Polito identified as suspect of Las Vegas shooting

LAS VEGAS, NV – The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), is grappling with a tragic incident as law enforcement identifies 67-year-old Anthony Polito as the suspect in a deadly shooting on campus. Described as a semi-retired professor and a father and grandfather, Polito allegedly had unsolved personal differences with the university, leading to the unfortunate incident.

Tony Polito, a university professor in Las Vegas, held degrees from prestigious institutions such as the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia, Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, and Radford University. With a diverse academic background, Polito was associated with East Carolina University for over fifteen years and had achieved a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Georgia.

The shooting occurred on Wednesday, just before noon, resulting in the tragic deaths of three individuals on the UNLV campus. Reports suggest that Polito had applied for a professorship at the university, but his application was allegedly turned down. In the aftermath, he opened fire with a revolver, taking the lives of three individuals before being shot by police during a confrontation.

Detectives are actively investigating the incident, and a search of Polito’s residence is currently underway. The identities of the victims remain undisclosed, and one person, who was shot, is in stable condition. Two police officers received treatment for minor injuries, and four individuals are hospitalized due to panic episodes during the incident.

University Police Services Director Adam Garcia reported that officers confronted the suspect immediately after receiving the 911 call at 11:45 a.m. Officers engaged the subject, resulting in the suspect’s death. The quick response aimed to neutralize the threat on campus.

In response to the incident, UNLV and other higher education institutions in Nevada implemented a campus closure for safety reasons. Although no immediate danger exists for other schools, the cautionary measure was taken. A significant police presence, including tactical squads, responded to the alert advising students to “RUN-HIDE-FIGHT.”

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop for arriving aircraft at Harry Reid International Airport, located approximately two miles north of the UNLV campus. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department confirmed the suspect’s death less than an hour after the incident. The investigation is ongoing as officials work to understand the full scope of the tragedy.

As the UNLV community and the city of Las Vegas come to terms with the devastating events, thoughts and condolences extend to the victims’ families, and the community grapples with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence.
