News Tom Weiskopf
The 1973 British Open also belonged to Tom Weiskopf, a 16-time PGA Tour champion. Weiskopf passed away on August 20. He was 79 years old and has been battling pancreatic cancer since late 2020. Weiskopf has experience in all parts of the game, from his time on the PGA Tour. to his television work as a golf commentator as well as a renowned golf course designer.
He won 16 titles on the PGA Tour from 1968 to 1982. The 1995 US Senior Open was one of his four victories on the PGA Tour Champions. He possessed an unusually high ball trajectory for his day, while also possessing exceptional power and control. He was on two Ryder Cup winning teams for the United States and famously declined to be selected to the third team. Due to his infamous fights with rage on the golf course, Weiskopf, who is 6 feet 3 inches tall, has earned the nickname “Towering Hell”.
On November 9, 1942, Weiskopf was born in Massillon, Ohio. He golfed for the Ohio State University team and was billed as the “next Nicklaus” to come out of the school’s program. He started working professionally in 1964.
According to a close friend, Tony Jacklin, he has had a great career. The fact that he kept crashing into Nicklaus was horrible. He has a lot of respect for Jack.
Weiskopf achieved great success in 1973, winning seven competitions worldwide, including his only major at Royal Troon. He has so much talent and skill that people sometimes criticize him for not having many wins, a topic he covered in an interview with Golfweek in 2020.
“Even though people push me to work harder, I don’t really feel the urge or inclination to do so. For me, golf is more of a means than an end. That’s how I give my family the best life possible. I value being outside, fishing and hunting more. More emphasis is placed on achieving the feat of sheep. He announced that I gave up the Ryder Cup for a year to finish my big shot.
Weiskopf, a four-time runner-up at the Masters, expressed regret for not reaching his full potential sooner. “Why can’t I do that? is a question I often ask myself. Why can’t I run? Why do I drink? I have 20 years of sobriety. I am most proud of that. I love to party and have a great time. I can use my talents whenever I want or need to, but I don’t care about that,” he said.
