Woodbury County, IA – A tragic standoff in northwest Iowa has resulted in the deaths of a father and son, Todd Sulsberger, aged 72, and Walter Sulsberger, aged 44, following a confrontation with law enforcement officers on Sunday night. The Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office received a distress call around 7:30 p.m., alerting them to a dangerous situation unfolding at a residence near Old Highway 141.

Sheriff Chad Sheehan, speaking at a press conference on Monday, revealed that Todd Sulsberger had contacted authorities, reporting that his son, Walter Sulsberger, was firing shots at him. Upon arrival, law enforcement encountered Walter, who continued to threaten them, refusing any peaceful resolution. The sheriff’s office swiftly sought support from the Iowa State Patrol, the Sioux City Police Department, and additional units to manage the escalating situation.

In the early hours of Monday, during a phone conversation with a crisis negotiator, Walter began firing at the tactical team as they attempted to approach him. In response, law enforcement retaliated, resulting in Walter’s death despite immediate medical attention. The circumstances surrounding Todd’s passing have not been disclosed, although he was also pronounced deceased at the scene. The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations is currently conducting an inquiry into the father’s death and the officer-involved shooting incident.

The incident also involved the ignition of substantial hay bales, with the cause of the fire remaining unknown. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the first responders. As per protocol, the officers involved in the use of firearms have been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation, as confirmed by Sheriff Sheehan.
