Tiara Wheeler Norwich: Tragic Accident Claims Life in Groton Crash

Groton, Connecticut – A devastating multi-vehicle crash that occurred on Tuesday, August 29, has left the community in shock as it claimed the life of 24-year-old Tiara Wheeler. Tiara was tragically killed in the accident, leaving her family and the community grappling with the loss. The incident unfolded near Long Hill Road and the Meridian Street Extension, leading authorities to anticipate potential criminal charges for some of the individuals involved.

Tiara Wheeler was the child of Tyson Wheeler, a former college basketball player renowned for his time with the University of Rhode Island from 1994 to 1998.

According to reports from WFSB, the accident transpired due to a collision involving a dirt bike and an Audi Q7, driven by a 24-year-old woman. Tiara Wheeler was a passenger on the dirt bike at the time of the collision. The incident took place at around 9:30 pm and tragically resulted in her being thrown from the dirt bike and fatally injured upon impact. The operator of the dirt bike, a 25-year-old man from Mashantucket, sustained serious injuries and was initially transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London before being airlifted to Yale New Haven Hospital for further treatment.

The investigation revealed that the dirt bike, driven by the Mashantucket resident, collided with the Audi as it was legally making a turn. The incident occurred within a group of motorcycles and ATVs that were traveling through Groton at the time. However, it was reported that other members of the group fled the scene of the crash and even removed the dirt bike involved, complicating the ongoing investigation.

Groton Police Department’s Chief, Louis Fusaro, expressed his concerns about the situation, stating:

“In addition to the wanton disregard for human life, the actions of removing the involved dirt bike from the scene has tampered with and impeded this investigation.”

Eyewitness Willo Carter recounted the efforts of first responders to aid Tiara Wheeler at the scene. Carter mentioned that despite their relentless attempts, it became evident that her injuries were too severe to overcome. He shared his thoughts on the tragic incident:

“I saw them working on the person on the ground the one who passed away, they worked relentlessly to help them. I just saw them doing compressions and I saw them drop their gloves, I knew when the ambulance pulled away that it wasn’t good (…) It was preventable is what was going through my head. Pay attention to what you’re doing and you don’t have stuff like that happen.”

Chief Fusaro attributed Tiara Wheeler’s tragic death to the recklessness exhibited by dirt bikers and ATV enthusiasts on the road. He emphasized the importance of responsible behavior on the roadways to ensure the safety of all community members:

“People that are operating recklessly, operating unregistered vehicles, dirt bikes, ATVs, all things that don’t belong on our roadway not only create a hazard to them but create a hazard to the rest of the public and the behavior needs to stop.”
