News Thom Bateman
On BBC2’s Great British Menu, a chef from North Staffordshire was praised for coming up with a “wonderful meal”.
Cheddleton The Flintlock restaurant owner, Tom Bateman, hopes to have one of his flavorful dishes at the ultimate party. He is one of four chefs competing in the Central region in tonight’s episode that must prepare canapés, appetizers and fish dishes.
The animated and illustrated celebration of Paddington Bear’s 65th birthday is this year’s theme. Thom, a TikTok celebrity, admitted on the show that after leaving school, he went directly to the kitchen and since then he has posted several home cooking videos on social media.
At the height of the coronavirus pandemic, Thom launched The Flintlock “I immediately went into the kitchen after graduating because I always wanted to be a chef. Everything about my cuisine is influenced by nostalgia; it turns a memory into a meeting on a plate.” As a chef, I use social media. I consider myself the underdog because I lack the same profound experience as many others.
The meal had a lot of celeriac but was shrouded in secrecy, with Judge Paul Ainsworth announcing that “it’s a secret.” It contains baked celeriac that has been filled with pureed celeriac, potato “flakes” and a ketchup made with black garlic, apples, and dates.
The meal is created to resemble a dragon’s egg and even features smoldering embers to add a wonderful touch to the dish. The other nominees gave it high marks, giving it an overall score of 9 out of 10. “Dragonology” also scored well with judge Paul, who praised the presentation and the wonderfully grilled celeriac, but said the flakes Potatoes need to be crispier.
“I think black garlic ketchup, apples and dates are great. The ingenuity of the dish is that I wouldn’t be able to tell if it was made from plants if I closed my eyes and ate it.”
