Tafari Campbell, 45, of Dumfries, Virginia, was found dead in Edgartown Great Pond on Monday, according to police.
After receiving a call about a man paddleboarding “who got into the water, apparently briefly trying to surface, then sank,” police have been searching the lake since Sunday night. He disappeared into thin air.
The Obamas hired Campbell, who resides at Martha’s Vineyard. At the time of the incident, the Obamas were not at home.

“When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House – creative and passionate about food and his ability to bring people together,” the couple said in a statement. Following a report from another boater that a man had disappeared under the water at Edgartown Great Pond, the search for the missing boatman began Sunday just before 8pm.
The search was halted late Sunday, however, state police reported that at around 10 a.m. Monday, sonar from a boat discovered the body about 100 feet (30 meters) from shore at a depth of about 8 feet (2.4 meters). Police reported that Campbell was not wearing a life jacket.
According to the Obamas, Campbell was survived by his wife and their twin sons. The couple announced that the passing of a very beautiful young man is being mourned today, adding that they “together with everyone who knew and loved Tafari – especially his wife Sherise and their twin sons, Xavier and Savin – do it.”

Tafari Campbell, the former White House sous chef who later worked as the Obama family’s personal chef, died Monday in a paddle boarding accident near the Obamas’ Katama residence in Martha’s Vineyard, as mentioned earlier.
In a press release, the Massachusetts State Police announced Campbell had passed away. Divers pulled Campbell from a pond on Edgartown Great Road shortly before 10 a.m. ET.
“Just before 10 a.m., Massachusetts State Police divers pulled the body of the missing boatman from Edgartown Great Pond. According to the statement, the victim’s body was discovered by a Massachusetts Environmental Police officer using a side-scan sonar deployed from a boat. The MSP Underwater Recovery Unit divers then performed the restoration work.
The victim was a 43-year-old man, as stated earlier. For now, his name is being kept secret, but we plan to do that later today.
“The restoration was done at a depth of about 8 feet, about 100 feet from the shore.
The State Police Detective Unit for Cape and Islands County and the Edgartown Police are conducting an investigation into the death, announced it is over.
