The Repair Shop is back on BBC One, Jay Blades and the crew are aiming to please some new viewers. A 65-year-old leather document case brought in by Chippenham resident Malcolm Jordan for restoration by Suzie Fletcher. Despite a rough start, Suzie joined the show at the beginning of its second season and has never looked back.
Five years before the show’s debut, in 2013, she experienced the death of her partner, which she called one of the biggest shocks she’s ever experienced. After coming to America to work as a saddler in Illinois, Suzie first met her husband in Colorado.
She was only expected to be in the US for two years, but she ended up residing there for 22 years before returning to the UK. After a period of battle with cancer starting from the time she lived in the US, her husband passed away.
“My family is amazing, but I know they don’t need to worry so much,” she said on the Relativity podcast. “I also have a pretty good support group of my friends in the United States. “I think I tried to discourage them from learning too much, especially since my mother is still alive and she would be extremely worried if she thought I wouldn’t be able to handle it.
“Honestly, when we got that news, I realized that my priority was to give my husband whatever he wanted, no matter how difficult it seemed. I will try to fulfill his wish if he wants to travel to the moon. She was heartbroken over his passing, but she used the Repair Shop as a method to move on with her life.
She talked about how the program helped her through many difficult times and even motivated her to enroll in the course. She added: “Steve looks so happy every time he calls, so I joked, ‘If they need someone to make leather, I’m your girl.'”
