Chef Susan Feniger, a popular restaurateur in the Los Angeles area for more than 35 years, reckons she’s been through everything, including earthquakes, social upheavals and recessions, up until the spring of 2020, when the pandemic raged.
To save restaurants, chef Susan Feniger is putting herself in jeopardy.
Feniger described the impact of the crisis on the restaurant and hospitality industry as “much more intense”. “I mean, it’s one thing when you have to shut down for four or five days because of riots and curfews, but I believe this is really hard for everyone. In a way that nothing else has ever done, it really jeopardizes the company.
For this reason, according to Feniger, it is important for people to be aware of and support legislation that can help a struggling industry, where an estimated 6 million people have lost their jobs.
She claims that the Restaurant Act is one of those things that people are trying to promote. “So we are trying to get people to write to their congressmen about this action and why they should support it because otherwise their local restaurants will does not exist after this. [Congress] need to sign this bill,” the campaign wrote. And whether that happens or not, get rid of this president [Donald Trump] is my top priority over and above my business.
Even if a pandemic could strike at any time, it would be extremely unfortunate if it happened right after a popular new restaurant in the Los Angeles area opened. Feniger and longtime business partner Mary Sue Milliken opened Socalo, a chic California canteen and Mexican bistro, last December.

There was only one other woman in the kitchen when Feniger was working at a French restaurant in Chicago, and that was Mary Sue, which is how the two of them first connected. “I think the chef there is a total jerk.
Mary and I were the only women in the kitchen because the other men were all men. During our afternoon break, I went to the bathroom with Mary Sue and started crying. (Feniger claims that the original chef finally came out as gay a few years later and even applied to work for the couple.)
