The daughter of Steve Mcallister, the esteemed owner of McAllister Greenhouses, Inc., a beloved retail garden center in Anderson County, has announced the heartbreaking news of her father’s passing. Steve Mcallister’s journey came to an untimely end several weeks after he sustained severe injuries in a tragic car accident on Friday, August 25, 2023.
After the accident on that fateful Friday evening, Steve was rushed to CMC Main, where a team of medical professionals initiated an emergency operation to address his critical condition. His injuries were extensive, necessitating multiple surgeries and intensive care. A breathing tube was inserted to aid his respiration, and he was periodically brought out of sedation to assess his neurological health.
Incredibly, during these brief moments of consciousness, Steve displayed remarkable signs of responsiveness. He could move all of his fingers and toes and readily follow instructions. At one point, he even communicated by nodding his head in response to queries. However, he remained sedated and dependent on a ventilator for breathing support.
On August 31st, Steve underwent another round of medical procedures, including a bronchoscopy, adjustments to sedation, and modifications to his ventilator settings. He also had a chest tube inserted to manage his condition. Following a night of rest, both his oxygen levels and breathing improved, infusing hope into the hearts of his family members.
The medical team identified an inflammatory response in Steve’s respiratory system, possibly related to the surgery on his femur. Despite challenges, the family maintained a positive outlook. A CT scan revealed minor bleeding near his liver and spleen, among other concerns. In the days leading up to his passing, doctors attempted interventions to prevent further complications, including bleeding and clot formation in the lungs, necessitating frequent bronchoscopy procedures.
Steve Mcallister’s son, Lindsey VanHoose shared a facebook post for his dad. He stated that:
Daddy went home to be with Jesus last night. He went very peacefully and comfortably, surrounded by his people and immeasurable amounts of love. If you know him, you know the sadness is only for us. He is healthy, whole and enjoying the presence of his Savior he served so well. Thank you all for all of your love and support for our family. We have been so blessed by my dad and all those who love him.
Steve Mcallister’s medical care involved Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ventilator support, antibiotics, and various medications. Despite the dedicated efforts of medical professionals and the unwavering support of his family, Steve’s condition deteriorated, and he was unable to recover.
