Steve started his acting career at the neighborhood theater when he was 6 years old. At the age of 16, he earned an Actor’s Equity certificate for his performances in two shows hosted by Oscar Hammerstein Jr. director. He performed in a number of shows while in college, including The Little Theater of the Rockies with Nick Nolte.
After graduating from college, he was awarded a scholarship to teach at the University of Arizona, where he made his SAG debut in Joe Kidd, alongside Clint Eastwood. Joe Kidd as Rider was his first leading role in a Western film in 1972. He moved to Los Angeles in 1974 and enrolled in the Charles Conrad Studio. That same year, he made his television debut as an Airline Officer in the television series Night Game.
He later appeared as a guest on several television shows, including Petrocelli (1974-1976), Wonder Woman (1976), Little House on the Prairie (1977), Mulligan’s Stew (1977), The Six Million Dollar Man (1978), and ABC Afterschool Special (1978), among others.
