News Silvio Berlusconi
Flamboyant media magnate Silvio Berlusconi, who served as Italy’s longest-serving prime minister in post-war period marred by sex scandals and allegations of corruption, has died. He was 86.
Just three weeks after being discharged from a previous course of treatment, Berlusconi was taken to a hospital in Milan on Friday. He has a history of heart problems, including a damaged valve that was replaced by doctors in 2016, and in 2020, after contracting Covid-19, he was hospitalized with a lung infection .
According to Alessandro Cattaneo, deputy coordinator of Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party, the former prime minister died on Monday morning, according to RaiNews24 broadcaster.
One of the key figures in Italian politics over the past three decades has been Berlusconi. In the 1980s, he founded a television empire before using the stage and his knack for memorable audio clips to win three national elections.
In a country where the government is constantly changing, he has led four separate cabinets for more than nine years, an extraordinary term. Even when his party is no longer the dominant force, he still acts as king to bring center-right coalitions to power.
