In 1996, Oliver was elected to the Essex County Board of Freeholders. She served on the board for three years and then was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly in 2004. In the Assembly, she served as the chair of the Human Services Committee and was a member of the Appropriations Committee.
In 2009, Oliver was elected Speaker of the Assembly, becoming the first Black woman to hold the position in New Jersey. She served as Speaker until 2017, when she was elected lieutenant governor.
As lieutenant governor, Oliver served as commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs. She was also a member of the Governor’s Cabinet and the State Board of Education.
