A BBC Scotland reporter recently discussed how she interviewed a woman who had sepsis just weeks ago but didn’t recognize her own symptoms.
Presenter Sarah McMullan started feeling “very cold” during her morning shift, but she hasn’t called NHS 24 in more than 36 hours. Her temperature rose to 40 degrees while she was in the hospital for six days. Sarah admitted that she was extremely lucky and said: “I should have acted sooner.”
Following an interview she did for BBC Scotland’s The Nine on 1 September as part of Sepsis Awareness Month, the presenter fell ill for the first few days of October.
Kimberley Bradley spoke in the episode about her experience with meningococcal septicemia that turned into sepsis and put her in an artificial coma for 8 days. It’s a rare but dangerous infection, sometimes called blood poisoning.
Sarah, 30, told BBC Radio Scotland’s Drivetime show that “she went through all the symptoms and what to look out for and what to remember and when to get help and I don’t remember clear about them.”
A few weeks later, the journalist got goosebumps and broke out in a cold sweat while doing a morning broadcast in the BBC Scotland studio at Pacific Quay in Glasgow. Sarah later told a colleague that the situation was “really not good”.
