Saquan Santiago, killed in shooting outside Greenville store, three charged in connection

Following the tragic shooting incident that occurred at the Red Oak Grill and Grocery on Greenville Boulevard, three individuals have been charged in connection with the fatal attack. Dashaun Payton, 29, and Trevon Jenkins, 25, face charges of murder, while 18-year-old Xysean Mayfield has been charged with felony accessory after the fact, as confirmed by court documents.

The incident, which occurred around seven o’clock in the evening, involved shots fired from a car, targeting multiple victims at the location. Chief Ted Sauls stated that the violent attack also resulted in a car crashing into the establishment, escalating the severity of the situation.

The unfortunate outcome of the shooting led to the death of 19-year-old Saquan Santiago, who was found near the parking area of the store. Another victim, 18-year-old Kemari Ruffin, sustained critical injuries and was transported to ECU Health Medical Center for urgent medical attention.

Furthermore, a 17-year-old victim suffered a gunshot wound to the arm and received immediate medical care, while a stray bullet injured 18-year-old Itzel Martin, who was swiftly taken to ECU Health for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

In response to the incident, the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Response Team collaborated with the SBI’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team to assist in the apprehension of the three suspects. Presently, Payton and Jenkins remain in custody without bond, while Mayfield’s bond has been set at $250,000.

The family of Saquan Santiago intends to release his obituary and funeral arrangements at a later date, as they cope with the profound loss and tragedy.
