On September 16, 2022, airport authorities in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota, accused non-binary American nuclear engineer and Department of Energy employee Sam Brinton of stealing a woman’s suitcase. According to the New York Post, when the unnamed woman’s luggage went missing, MSP airport authorities investigated CCTV video and discovered that Sam Brinton, 34, had stolen her suitcase worth more than $2,000. Brinton was photographed with luggage twice more during a trip to Washington, DC, on September 18 and October 9.

When Sam Brinton received a call from Minnesota officials on October 9, he informed police that they had stolen the bags by mistake.

Brinton allegedly stated:

“If I get the wrong suitcase, I’m willing to return it, but I don’t have any clothes for anyone else.” When I opened the package, they were my clothes.”

However, the charges in October tarnished their historic ascent in the federal government. Authorities questioned Brinton’s assertion that they had inadvertently stolen the suitcase after arriving at the baggage claim area without checking in any baggage beforehand. In response to the criminal complaint, the Department of Energy placed Brinton on leave until the matter was resolved in November. Their criminal trial is set for December 19 of this year.
