He further stressed the lack of a safer fence, calling it “ridiculous” and describing it as the heaviest beating he’s ever experienced. Despite his personal safety, Blaney expressed disappointment for his team and their race ending prematurely.
NASCAR later issued a statement about the lack of more safety barriers. They state that their safety engineers work closely with experts to implement tracking barriers and assure that they will evaluate all available data to make the necessary improvements.
The incident occurred in Round 147, shortly after the reboot, when Blaney was involved in a wreck caused by William Byron. Byron initially contacted Brad Keselowski, causing a chain reaction. Kyle Busch’s subsequent hit sent Blaney out of control and across the lawn, eventually hitting the concrete wall at the end of the pit.
SAFER bumpers are designed to reduce the impact on the driver, absorbing kinetic energy during high-speed collisions. Surprisingly, these barricades were installed all over the track, except for the part where Blaney crashed.
