Cambridge, ON – The Preston community in Cambridge, Ontario, is grieving the loss of a beloved figure, Russell Wales, who was not just a skilled mechanic but also a trusted friend to many. Russell passed away tragically in a motorcycle accident on September 4, 2023.
Russell Wales had dedicated over 25 years of his life to serving the Preston area through his business, Russell Automotive Service, located at 1826 Coronation Blvd. He was a familiar face to countless individuals who turned to him whenever they faced automotive troubles. His dedication, honesty, and expertise made him a cherished member of the community.
On that fateful day, September 4, Russell, a 67-year-old mechanic, embarked on what would be his last motorcycle ride. Around 10:55 a.m., tragedy struck as an SUV collided with his bike on Wellington Road 19 at Wellington Road 16. Russell was rushed to a local hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead. He had been carrying a passenger who sustained minor injuries and was also transported to a local hospital.
The news of Russell Wales’s passing devastated the community, leaving many customers and friends in shock. To those who frequented his shop, Russell was more than just a mechanic; he was a trusted businessman and a friend. Customers recall the exceptional service and kindness he offered.
Debbie Collison, a long-time customer, remembered what set Russell apart—his honesty. On one occasion, when she visited his shop for a rim repair, Russell went above and beyond to ensure she could get to work on time. He not only fixed her rim quickly but also assisted another customer by resolving their car issue, all without charge. Acts of goodwill like these made customers like Collison appreciate Russell’s trustworthiness.
Russell had plans for retirement and was preparing to sell his business, according to some of his customers. The news of his passing came as a shock to those who knew him, leaving them deeply saddened.
Russell Automotive Service, once a thriving hub for automotive needs, remains closed indefinitely, as indicated on the business’s Facebook page. The void left by Russell’s absence is felt not just in the automotive world but also in the hearts of those who valued his friendship and professionalism.
Russell Wales’s legacy lives on through the memories of the countless lives he touched during his career. He was not only an exceptional mechanic but also a compassionate and generous human being, leaving an indelible mark on the Preston community.
As one close friend, Jason Young, aptly put it, “I have known Russell almost as long as I have been driving. He was a great man, and we had many conversations.”
At this time, the family and community are mourning the loss of a remarkable individual whose impact will be remembered for years to come.
