In a statement to 11 News on Monday night, Murtha said: “Roy’s death is a terrible tragedy and I believe it is important for me to speak out.
After McGrath, 53, of Naples, Florida, failed to appear March 13 in federal court in Baltimore on corruption charges, he became the target of a nationwide manhunt. McGrath was discovered by officials in the Knoxville, Tennessee area, according to reports from the FBI Baltimore Office and the US Police Department earlier Monday night.
It was not immediately clear if McGrath’s injuries were self-inflicted or due to gunfights with FBI officers. In a statement, the FBI announced it was “looking into a shooting involving agents that took place on April 3 at approximately 6:30 p.m. KST.
Roy McGrath, the subject of the arrest, was injured in the process and taken to hospital. All shootings involving agents or task force members are taken seriously by the FBI. The FBI’s Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting in accordance with FBI regulations.”
Federal prosecutors allege that McGrath misled administrators at the Maryland Department of the Environment, where he serves as chief executive officer, by hinting that former governor Larry Hogan had approved pay for him $233,648 in severance in exchange for becoming Hogan’s chief of staff.
After just 11 weeks in the role of chief of staff, McGrath resigned in August 2020 after Hogan refused permission to leave. In addition, he was charged with fraud and theft in connection with expenditures totaling approximately $170,000. A reward of up to $20,000 was provided by the FBI and the US Marshals Service for information leading to his arrest.
October 5, 2021, indictment of McGrath. He pleaded not guilty to each charge, and after being released on that condition, he was brought to trial. On June 28, 2022, an alternate indictment accused McGrath of erasing, altering or fabricating documents related to federal investigations. On Monday night, Hogan released a statement that read: “Yumi (Hogan) and I are heartbroken by this dire situation. For the McGrath family and other loved ones, we are praying.”
