Rose Styron’s career

Poet, journalist and human rights advocate Rose Styron. From Summer to Summer (Viking Press, 1965), Thieves’ Afternoon (Viking Press, 1972), By Vineyard Light (Rizzoli, 1995), and Fierce Day (Friesen Press, 2015) are four volumes of poetry she has produced. Her poetry is a reflection of her own feelings, perceptions and travels. She has also worked with others on Russian translations, including Modern Russian Poetry and Poet on Street Corners (both published by Viking Press).

For many magazines, including The New York Review of Books, The Nation, The New Republic, The Paris Review, Ms Magazine, Vogue, Holiday, Ramparts, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Chicago Sun-Times , etc., Rose Styron is the author of essays on international relations and human rights.

Since joining the founding team of Amnesty International USA in 1970, Rose Styron has been actively involved in many human rights organizations. For Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Reebok Human Rights Foundation, Lawyers Committee on Human Rights, Equality Now, and the Justice Project, among others, she went to many places.

She has also served as chairperson of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award, Amnesty International’s National Advisory Council, and PEN’s Freedom of Writing Committee. To promote human rights activism, she has traveled to countries such as Latin America, Soviet Union, Central Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia.

William Styron’s Letters to My Father (Louisiana State University Press, 2009) and The Selected Letters of William Styron (Random House, 2012), both edited by her, have introductions written by Rose Styron. She also wrote about William Styron’s illness and its effects on the family in a chapter for The Unfortunate Ghost: A Writer of Sickness (Harper Collins, 2002).

Rose Styron has won numerous awards and acclaim for her work as a poet and a human rights advocate. In 2009 and 2010, she was a resident fellow at Harvard’s Carr Institute for Politics and Center for Human Rights. She also served as co-chair of the Academy of American Poets in the Lincoln Center’s theatrical production of Poetry and Creative Intelligence.
